Henry A `Al` Fairbanks was also a seasoned combat pilot, having flown from the Old U.S.S. Wasp and U.S.S. Hornet. He was in the fighter squadron that made the trip to Tokyo and watched the famous Doolittle B-25 raiders take off from the Hornet for their raid on Japan. He was involved in the Battle of Coral Sea and flew raids over Bougainville and other enemy strongholds.
